Courts.tennis is a reference site. You can read every page without an account and without telling us anything about yourself. Nothing here is for sale.
Signing in is only needed to say when you’re going to a court, or to ask to join someone who is. That part is described under If you sign in below.
What is stored before you choose
One cookie is set the first time you arrive, before you have answered the cookie banner. It is called t1_aid. It holds a random identifier, it lasts a year, and it exists so that repeat visits can be counted as one reader rather than several. It is not linked to a name or a phone number unless you go on to sign in.
If you arrive on a link that carries a campaign or referral code in the address, a second cookie called t1_src records where you came from, for the same length of time. It stores the code from the link, not a history of where else you have been.
We are telling you about these plainly because they are set whatever you choose in the banner. If you would rather not keep them, clear this site’s cookies in your browser, or block cookies for this site.
Your answer to the cookie banner is kept in your browser, and in a cookie called 4grand_cookie_consent so our server can respect it. When you answer, we also count the answer, yes or no, with nothing that identifies you, so we know how many people say yes.
Paris pages are published in French and English. If you switch between them, your choice is kept in your browser (under ct_lang) so that links to Paris open in that language. It is never sent to us. To choose which language a Paris link opens in before you have chosen, your browser asks our server which country you are visiting from; the answer is a two-letter country code, used in your browser and not stored.
On the page that finds the courts near you, your browser asks our server what is close to you. The server answers from the rough location every connection carries (a point and a city, worked out from your internet address by our hosting provider), and keeps nothing of it. If you tap “Use my exact location”, your browser asks your permission first, then sends that position to our server once, for that one answer. It is not stored or logged. Where a forecast is needed for where you are, it is asked for a point rounded to about ten kilometres. On a city’s own page, sorting the courts by distance happens in your browser, and your position is not sent anywhere.
What is stored only if you accept
Accepting the cookie banner turns on two things. Google Analytics, which tells us which pages get read and roughly where readers are, and our own measurement of how a page is used: how far it was scrolled, what was clicked, whether something was clicked repeatedly because it did not work. That second one records the shape of the visit and never its content. It does not read what you type, and it does not record your screen.
Decline, and neither runs. Google still receives a basic record of the page view with no cookie attached, which is used only to count traffic.
If you sign in
Signing in uses your 4GRAND account, the same one used on grand.tennis and The Grand NYC. Courts.tennis and those sites are all run by 4GRAND. If you do not have an account yet, signing in here makes one.
- Your phone number, to sign you in (we text you a one-time code) and to text you about your games. It is never shown to another player.
- Your name. Signed-in players see only your first name. Your full name is shown only to a player whose request you said yes to, or who said yes to yours.
- That you confirmed you are 18 or older, and when.
- What you post and ask to join: the court, the time, the level you give, what you are looking for and any note, and each answer. These are shown only to signed-in players, never on the public page. The public page says only whether anyone has posted at that court recently.
- Whether each game happened, as each of you says afterwards. A game counts on your record, which other signed-in players can see, only when both of you say it was played. A no-show counts only when the other player says so.
- Your photo, if you add one. It is made smaller on your phone before it is sent, and we remove the details a camera stores inside a photo, including where it was taken. It is shown only to you and to someone you agree to play with, never on a court page. Remove it any time on your profile.
- Messages you and the other player write on a game you both agreed to. No other player can see them. 4GRAND can read them, and does when one of you reports the other. They are never sent by text: the other player gets a text saying there is a message, with a link to read it here.
- Blocks and reports you make, and the reason you give. A report is read by 4GRAND; the person you report is not told who made it.
Signing in sets a session cookie called 4grand_session for 30 days, and a cookie called ct_in that only tells this site’s pages that you have signed in here, so they know to fetch who is going. While you are entering your code, two short-lived cookies (ct_otp_phone and ct_otp_adult) last ten minutes.
Text messages
When you sign in with your phone number, you agree to receive text messages from 4GRAND about your account and your games: your sign-in code, when someone asks to join your post, when your request is accepted, when a game is called off, and when the other player on a game sends you a message. Nothing else is sent from this site. Message and data rates may apply. You can opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message, or reply HELP for help. Opting out means you will not hear about requests until you look.
If you write to us
The contact form keeps your name, the email or phone number you give so we can reply, and your message, so that we can answer you. We are told by text that a message came in; the text does not include what you wrote. If you give an email address, it and your message are also added to 4GRAND’s own contact list.
What we never collect here
- No payment details. Nothing on this site is for sale.
- No stored location. Where you are is used only to answer you on the page that finds the courts near you, as described above, and is never kept.
- No recording of your screen or of what you type.
Who else sees it
We do not sell anything about you. The site runs on hosting and database providers who process this data on our behalf, and on Google for the analytics described above. We will hand over information if the law requires it.
The court facts themselves
Everything this directory publishes publicly is about places, not people. Court counts, surfaces, floodlights and locations come from the City of New York where it publishes them, and from sources named on each page. If you believe something here is wrong about a venue, please tell us and we will check it against a source.
Changes
We will change the date above if this policy changes, and we will not quietly widen what is collected without saying so here first.
